Sustainable Defensible Space

DefensibleSpace.org

is a platform advocating for sustainable, Firewise practices in Southern California landscapes.

Developed by the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains (RCDSMM) in collaboration with RIOS and a diverse steering committee of experts, and funded by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) through the California Climate Investments Program, this project introduces the concept of Sustainable Defensible Space (SDS) — the area extending up to 100 feet around a home.

The initiative focuses on offering practical solutions to improve resilience, resource conservation, and the resistance of structures to wildfire loss within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) by enhancing homeowner management of defensible space zones.
